As a political player, the AStA should be a pioneer in non-commercial and open source software. In the context of self-determination, we students have the right to be able to inform us in the best possible way with which programs and algorithms our data is processed. We therefore aim to replace as many commercial tools and programs as possible with open source solutions. The aim should be that the AStA relies entirely on Open Source, from the operating system, through standard applications to special applications. Unfortunately, we are still miles away from this point.

In addition, privacy has always been an important issue on our agenda. We would like to design a General Students’ Committee, in which topics such as secure data exchange (eg via encrypted e-mails) and trusting storage and handling of and with personal data are an integral part.

A core topic of the next legislative period should be the subject of the free and open wifi project “Freifunk”. In cooperation with the local hackerspace of the Chaos Computer Club, flipdot, it should be possible at all locations of the university for everyone, and not only for students enrolled in Kassel, who have their log-in data at hand, via the Freifunk Network sure to go uncensored and anonymous online. In general, there should be an exchange with the flipdot to give students the opportunity to further their education in information technology and privacy.
